Why so hip?
Married to the Sea is known for their comics touching upon (aka mocking) human nature at its finest, and in this case, its hippest. If you don’t know Godspeed You! Black Emperor, their long, instrumental songs are known for being experimental, and you can’t get much more hip than that. In fact they are such hep cats that throughout their existence, they’ve changed around the placement of the “!” in their name*. This keeps us intrigued, and even more importantly, it dates their music. Yes, that guy wearing an American Apparel tank top and skinny jeans was actually saying “I listened to Godspeed You! Black Emperor back when they were Godspeed! You Black Emperor. That was before they sold out.” This comic's one flaw is that apparently the hep cats in Godspeed You! Black Emperor have already reunited. But don’t tell too many people or it won’t be cool anymore.
*This information about the moving “!” came from a professor of Philosophy (Philosophy of Contemporary Music, to be exact) at Villanova University. He can be seen at the Holy Grounds in Falvey Memorial Library by day, and rocking to Diplo (Philadelphia’s hippest DJ) by night. Most importantly, he is always sporting plaid sneakers and a fedora.
